There
are many problems in the life of daily drivers, such as taxi drivers
like my father. To reconstruct these problems, we have to focus on
the issue that causes the highest rate of incidents. There are many
laws, signs, and consequences of accidents caused by drunk driving,
but what are the results in the end?
According
to an article, “The
NHTSA reports that almost 29 people die daily in America due to drunk
driving. That amounted to one person dead every 50 minutes in 2016.
While drunk driving deaths have fallen by ⅓ in the last 30 years,
drunk driving crashes still claim at least 10,000 lives per year. The
most recent statistics from 2010 state that the deaths and damages
from drunk driving led to a loss of $44 billion that year.”
According to another article, “About one in three traffic deaths in
the United States involve a driver with a blood alcohol concentration
(BAC) of 0.08% or higher.” The problem doesn’t lie in the
consequences that the drunk drivers have to face, it lies in the
mindset of how people react to it.
A
law that I believe should be enacted, is the banning of drinking past
a certain time in the day. Most people drink during the evening,
leading them to drive home in the dark and cause an accident which
ends in death. A restriction on the time limit of alcohol consumption
could save thousands of lives each year. College students tend to
have parties in which they get drunk and are not stopped by their
friends to drive, leading to a larger number of deaths. Another law
that I believe should be enacted is prohibiting late night on campus
parties that students decide to throw.
Of
all the problems that people face on the road, drunk driving has to
be the most common and dangerous one because of the fact that the
person driving is not even close to the height of their god given
abilities. An accident could occur even when a person is fully sober.
Just a few days ago, a close family friend of mine died in a severe
car accident. All because of another driving dodging a hole in the
ground caused my dear friend to run straight into a bus and lose her
life. This is unjust because the poor girl was trying to not hit the
car that was going to run straight into her, but ended up losing her
life from running into a parked bus. Who is to blame?
The
city has to take action for street protocals before any driver does.
It is the driver’s full responsibility to drive cautiously as it is
the city’s responsibility to fix broken roads. The person who is
driving has to eliminate all usage of any devices that are
distractions to become a safe driver and have focus on the road ahead
of you to cautiously avoid potholes.
