I
just recently started driving, this was probably the most exciting
and freeing experience a teenager will experience. I knew I needed to
pay attention when I drive because not only am I making sure I am
safe but I also need to make sure to be aware of other drivers and
their safety.
The
most important thing teenagers need to learn before sitting behind
the wheel is to know the laws and the proper way to drive. Not many
students find it important to take a driving class even though most
schools provide the class, even though the class may sound boring the
class could save your life. Phones are one of the most distracting
things in life and especially on the streets. I think one of the most
important steps that everybody should take is to find a way to leave
their phone alone until they get to their destination, whether it’s
to install an app that locks your phone or to put it in the glove
compartment. Teens especially my age are constantly snapchatting
every minute of their days, I see a lot of my friends do it, they
think it’s not a big deal but they could get into an accident and I
don’t want that to ever happen. Another step that should be taken
is to put breathalyzers in cars, so many kids get into accidents
because they are to drunk to function, it’s not safe. If we had
breathalyzers in cars there would be less accidents.
I
have not been in a car accident I take safety as a first priority but
I have seen my friends drive irresponsibly. One of my friends was
speeding down a street in the middle of the night so he didn’t
think he would run into anybody. He ended up hitting a pole because
there was a dog that ran into the middle of the street and he didn’t
have enough time to brake. He got lucky and did not have to go to the
hospital but he totaled his car and learned his lesson.
There
are constantly better ways to be a safe driver, whether that is to
make sure you and your passengers put on their seat belts or to turn
down to music a little so you can focus. It’s not the first time
you’ve heard the song and it should not be the last because you
decided to throw a party on the freeway. Be smart, stay safe, and
don’t let your phone decide your last destination.
