Education for Safety?
In 2019 alone, there has been over 40,000 car accidents that have
ranged from aggressive driving and speeding, to driving under the
influence. With drivers ed courses, many people can be taught
what these fatalities can lead to and how it can be prevented. Not
only does the course teach what’s right, but it teaches the
students what each sign means, what to do in a bad situation, and
shows everything from the perspective of an experienced driver or
even survivor.
Being a high school student who wanted her license, but no time to
go to a physical classroom, I used parent taught. Each night when I
didn’t work, I put my focus on my driving. Before I would go
practice, I made sure to do at least one lesson, two if they were
shorter, and then put what I learned in my driving. By doing this, I
was able to see firsthand what each sign was, what each turn lane
looked like, and where my blind spots were.
As I said in my intro, a lot of fatalities are from aggressive
driving. Often times, drivers may get so worked up over what another
person is doing and they forget about themselves. In 2012, my cousin
and his neighbor were four-wheel driving and not looking for where
they were going. Instead they were driving while looking at a car
they thought was just so cool and an eighteen-wheeler hit them. After
this accident, my cousin had to get his leg amputated and his
neighbor broke some of his ribs and his arm. Had these boys payed
attention and taken their driving course, they would have known to
look both ways, not stop in the middle of the road, and drive
undistracted.
All in all, driving courses are only meant to help. Many of them
don’t require you to do it hours at a time, unless you want that,
and they are trying to keep the number of fatalities down. Not only
does the driver get hurt, but so can the passenger, so can the safe
drivers and so can pedestrians. If more awareness is raised about
these courses, those numbers can decrease and people won’t be
getting hurt and dying from situations that can be prevented.
