In
today’s society, reckless driving has increased drastically due to
the de-sensitivity of dangers on the road. Driving has become a
social norm and therefore the majority don’t think twice before
getting behind the wheel. It is because of this that there are rules
and regulations set in place as a precaution to avoid any potential
accidents. There is a process set in place to become a licensed
driver which requires courses to be taken that ensure, society as a
whole has done everything in its power to provide the necessary
education when it comes to driving. Drivers Ed courses are supposed
to prepare a driver for the realities of the road and stress safety
for not just the driver but for everyone else as well. The hope is
that with this knowledge being provided the number of deaths and
accidents will decrease.
There
are a number steps that can be taken to reduce the number of car
related deaths. The main step is simply knowing the value of a life.
Most people are only concerned with themselves, however, as a driver
you risk not only your own life but everyone else around you as well.
Acknowledging the hazards associated with driving ensures a higher
possibility for taking precautions. It’s as simple as wearing a
seatbelt, or following the speed limit, checking the mirrors before
switching lanes, or not checking your phone. Even simple actions can
make a big impact and save a life.
Everyone
dreads the phone call, “there was an accident.” No one ever wants
to be on the other side of that conversation. It’s a surreal
feeling, a weight set heavy on your chest the minute those words are
spoken. The situation seems unfathomable until you’re the one in
it. My grandparents themselves were recently in a car accident in
which my four-year-old cousin was also in the car. It was a collision
at a stop light where the driver’s side was hit and the car was
completely totaled. It was a miracle that there were no serious
injuries and everyone made safe recoveries. However it’s the
principle of the entire situation that matters. The severity of the
situation could’ve been worse, there were so many factors that
could have caused more damage. The emotional, mental and physical
distress that comes from these situations should be enough for people
to drive safely.
