Drivers ed is important in
reducing the number of deaths resulting from driving. Taking driver’s
education can significantly reduce accidents and traffic violations
among drivers. Some studies show drivers who have not taken driver’s
education have a higher instance of traffic tickets and are more
likely to be involved in fatal or injury accidents. There are several
benefits to taking drivers ed, like learning the rules of the
road, greater awareness of the effects of drugs and alcohol, personal
responsibility, and confidence.
Distracted driving is defined as
any activity that diverts attention from driving, including talking
or texting on your phone, eating and drinking, talking to people in
your vehicle, fiddling with the radio, entertainment or navigation
system etc. These activities create the potential for deaths or
injuries. But there are steps that can be taken to reduce the number
of deaths related to driving. Taking a drivers ed course is
just one of them. Keeping your vehicle in good shape, anticipating
the actions of others, take steps to protect yourself and others,
drive only when in sound physical and mental condition, and make a
conscious effort to develop your driving skills, to name a few.
I’ve experienced several
instances of being in the car while family and friends have done
something that is unsafe, like not wearing a seatbelt or being
distracted while driving. From what I’ve observed, it appears that
people tend to get comfortable over time. Sometimes they are
multi-tasking and forget how serious driving is. Not only is the
driver’s life at stack, but also those in the car and on the road
with them. I believe in these instances, it’s all our
responsibility to remind the driver of the severity of distracted
driving and the potential consequences.
Other ways to make driving safer
are to reduce your speed and stay within the posted speed limits, be
alert while on the road as well as in neighborhoods or parking lots,
remove potential distractions, like cell phones to prevent texting
and talking while driving and always wear your safety belts. Driver
education is important in reducing the number of deaths resulting
from driving and it’s all our responsibility to ensure that we do
what we can to keep our roads safe.
