Make
Society Aware
People
cannot execute an action, nor refrain from completing an action, if
not first knowledgeable about the choices they are making.
Information, process, and in the case of driving education;
consequences, are all crucial elements of decision making.
Society
is more conscious about how their actions will affect themselves and
others when they are aware of the risks that come when entering their
car. We are able to make society aware of how to prevent accidents
and tragedy by educating them on driving safety and caution. Steps
that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to driving
include seat belt safety, proper car seat precautions, and no
distracted driving. The overarching theme is the education and
awareness of consequences. In addition, seat belt safety should be
pressured, and fines should be in place. To make this safety truly
purposeful, existing laws must be enforced. Likewise, parents should
be held accountable for the car seat safety of their children. Law
enforcement should be more present and enforce such safety. The issue
of distracted driving is most prevalent in current times. Whether it
be by eating, driving under the influence, or actively being on a
cell phone, distracted driving is the culprit for the majority of
driving deaths. These actions should be strictly prohibited, and
businesses and schools should provide materials (such as brochures
and power points) to show the risk factors leading to driving
deaths.
It
is important that people learn early and continue to hear this
life-saving information. Parents must demonstrate safe driving
techniques to their children even before drivers ed
courses. Then, drivers ed instructors should show the
outcomes of risky driving behavior. Full impact comes when not
holding back or “sugar-coating” the consequences of potentially
deadly driving risks. Student drivers must be blatantly presented
with crashes, deadly situations, arrest stories, and fines. Drivers
should continue to be reminded of these consequences through means of
mass communication such as billboards and commercials.
Though
I have never personally had experience with myself or any others
being in a car accident due to distracted driving, I have experienced
a program called Shattered Dreams. This is a program that sets up a
real-life scenario driving accident. Everything is made to appear
real. Shattered Dreams includes actors in a real crashed car with
fake blood, a care flight, police and fire, staying in an actual
hospital, and spending the week being remembered as a dead friend and
family member.
Personally,
I practice safe driving techniques in that my number one rule is that
the car does not move out of park unless all seat belts are on. In
addition, I require all children to ride in a car seat in my back
seat and put my phone on do not disturb while driving. To help
others, I will ensure to provide education and awareness in all modes
possible.
