Safe
Driving

I
was six years old when I first experienced a car accident. A woman
crossed the median and hit the car head-on. Lucky my family had no
major injuries. This accident was caused by a driver not paying
complete attention to the road. The steps I take to make myself a
better driver involve driving do not disturb along with
double-checking. The first step I take before getting behind the
wheel is I put my phone on the driver do not disturb. This is a
setting on iPhones that when the Bluetooth is connected to a car
radio it automatically turns on or you can turn it on manually by
clicking the button. This type of do not disturb on your phone sends
out an automatic message to anyone who sends you a text while you are
driving and lets them know that you are driving and you will respond
when you are no longer driving. Another step I take is that I always
double-check my surroundings. For example, if I am at a stop sign, I
not only look left, right, left but I will do this twice to ensure
there is no oncoming traffic to harm me or any of my passengers. When
double-checking sometimes it has allowed me to see a car coming from
my right that I did not see the first time. I believe that drivers’
education is one of the most important classes a student can ever
take. This is because these new drivers are not only affecting
themselves but affecting every other driver on the road.
Approximately 3,115 new drivers were killed in car accidents in 2017.
This is over three-thousand adolescents who will never be able to go
home to home again. One possible step to reduce accidents in teen
drivers would be to increase a fine when a driver is caught using the
phone. The fine now in any state can range from no penalty to over
five hundred dollars in penalties. Twenty four percent of states in
the United States have less than a fifty dollar penalty.  So to
keep our drivers safe we as a society need to come together and learn
that without distractions we all will make each other safer on the
roadways.
