Learn
from Jane

Jane
is in the driver’s seat of the car, listening to her favorite song.
As she checks her GPS, she gets a notification stealing her
attention for a split second. What she didn’t realize in this
stolen time, is the drunk driver who’s not only swerving, but
speeding at 97mph. She didn’t notice they were right behind her.
What she does notice;however, is how damaged the rear end of her car
is as she is loaded up into an ambulance.

Frightening, isn’t
it? Everybody says that your choices influence your life events,
even those that seem too miniscule to matter. If Jane, for instance,
simply ignored her notification, she could’ve prevented a serious
traffic threat, as well as assure her own safety. But Jane isn’t
the only one to blame here. The drunken driver not only endangered
himself, as he stumbled into his car intoxicated, he endangered Jane
and the hundreds of other drivers on the road. Would you run with
scissors? No, because someone can get hurt. So why drive recklessly?
Both cases increase the possibility of causing injuries or
fatalities. In fact, according to Driver Knowledge, over 90 people a
day lose their life due to a vehicular accident.

I was in a car accident. It was only out of pure luck that nobody
was seriously injured. Despite it not being my first time, I was
scared out of my mind and my body was loaded with adrenaline. My
sister’s father was drunk and was persistent about giving me a
driving lesson, being that I was 15 at the time and thinking about
getting my permit soon. After a few laps around a parking lot, he
decided to drive us back home as buzzed as he was. In my gut, I knew
it was a bad idea, especially because my sister was there, and was
only 6 years old; however, I figured since he had driven before drunk
and there was no other way home since I never driven on the streets
before, I foolishly let him. As we were leaving, he did some rapid
laps around the lot and sped out, losing control and crashing into
two parked cars on the side. He didn’t allow time for me to put my
seatbelt on, and his acknowledgement of my sister’s presence flew
out the window. Today, he has been charged with DUI, child
endangerment, and a hit and run. As you can see, nothing good can
ever come from dangerous driving.

Currently, I am not
driving yet mainly because I fear over the knowledge of how
unpredictable and oblivious most drivers these days are, especially
the younger ones. Not enough people are informed about the
seriousness of not being distracted on the road, hence why the growth
of accidents, deaths, and fatalities continue to increase.

Help decrease the
statistics of car accidents and learn from Jane. Always stay alert
on the road. Remember to wear your seatbelt and leave your phone
alone while driving. And finally, don’t drink and drive.
