I
remember the day my mother took me to the DMV to take my driving
test. I never thought I could be so excited over a tiny slip of
paper! When I finally received the word that I had passed, I was
filled with excitement and a newfound sense of freedom that every kid
longs for. I turned to my mother, hoping that she would have the same
expression of joy as I did, but it was a look that I had never
experienced from her. Yes she was happy for me, but through her smile
she showed worry and fear. My mother was 14, starting her first day
of high school when she got a knock on the door. Suddenly, sounds of
screaming and crying had filled the whole house. Her young brother
had just been a victim of a fatal crash caused by a drunk driver. I
then realized that her expression was one of worry, not because she
didn’t trust me, but because she didn’t trust the other drivers
on the road with me. Many people don’t understand the
responsibility they are undertaking whenever they step into a
vehicle. In today’s society everyone is always in a rush and tends
to neglect the rules and safety precautions we have set in place so
citizens don’t have to face the consequences of other’s negligent
actions.
