Before You Drive
I
see people all the time on their phones driving, looking behind them
talking, or even just looking around outside not paying attention at
all to the road ahead of them. When asked most people will say they
are great drivers and they do not always have to be paying attention.
This is not the case at all. Most accidents result from people
looking away for a split second and not focusing on what is on the
road. In that split second anything could be on the road coming
towards you or even right in front of you. In order to reduce deaths
while driving we must first reduce the distractions around us. If you
know that you will be tempted to be on your phone while driving then
put it up somewhere that you won’t notice and be tempted by it. If
you know that your child will most likely be fussy in the car, invite
someone else to go with you who can help you calm them down or pull
over to comfort them and then proceed to your route.
In
2010 my sisters dad was addicted to drugs and decided to put my
sister and I in the car with him and drive away leaving my mom
behind. The entire drive I kept thinking that my sister and I weren’t
going to make it back from that drive. He was very reckless the whole
time, swerving left and right, not stopping at stop lights or signs,
and speeding very fast. His decision to get in the car and drive was
very reckless of him and put not only our lives in danger, but also
the lives around us.
A
step that I can take to be a safer driver is to make sure I don’t
have my music blaring while I am driving. I tend to do this a lot and
sometimes find myself getting distracted by it. I want to take the
initiative to stop doing this so I can make the road safer for myself
and others. To help others become safer on the road I plan to tell
people I see driving recklessly my story of my sisters dad, with hope
that they will learn from it. No one is a perfect driver and people
make mistakes, but with the attempt at working on all of these things
you reduce the chance of making these mistakes.
