Be
Safe Out There

Did
you know that nearly 1.25
million people die in automobile related accidents every year? It is
a sad thing to face that many drivers do not receive proper
instruction while learning to drive and most are passed in the
driving test while being horridly unqualified to be safely driving on
the road with other people. Not to mention the lack of knowledge of
what to do in difficult on the road situations. Truth is that many
accidents, injuries and deaths could be avoided with a more thorough
education in driving.

The
main thing that could help with decreasing the amount of accidents
and deaths from automobiles is to provide more in depth instruction
in drivers ed and have a more rigorous driving test to become a
licensed driver. Many people learn to drive from their parents, which
is part of the problem. Parents, while having experience driving, do
may not have experience teaching or have the qualifications that
driving instructors do, causing them to pass bad habits onto the kids
they are teaching. Bad habits such as not checking blind spots, one
handed driving, and not using signals that could cause a mass of
problems for any other people driving on the road. Another big issue
is the leniency of the driving test. Examiners will pass people who
could possibly be dangers to other people on the road, and who often
are. In Texas a score of 70 or better will pass anyone to drive on
the road, but the scoring system is highly flawed in many ways. First
of all, a score of at least 85 should be held as passing to ensure
that drivers are truly ready to be on the read. The scoring also
focuses too much on technical aspects such as speed, stopping
distance, turn signals, and while each of these things are incredibly
important, there are other things equally important that examiners
should look for that can’t be scored on a point basis. For
instance, the smoothness of a person’s driving, being aware of
surroundings at all times, watching out for potentially dangerous
drivers, and a person’s comfortability while driving. All of these
aspects are important for a good driver, and more importantly, a safe
driver.

This
is very important to me as I know what it is like to be seriously
injured in an accident. On July 5, 2019, I was hit by a van going 50
miles an hour while going camping and sent to the hospital for a
week. With 2 fractures in my wrist, a broken clavicle, a face
fracture, two fractures in my skull, and a traumatic brain injury, I
had some serious damage. Frankly I’m lucky to even be alive right
now, but somehow I escaped without much harm considering the cause,
able to fully recover in the span of 3 months. The fact of the matter
is that driving is a serious thing. People can get worse injuries and
even death from much less, and all it takes is one small slip up on
the road to cause irreversible damage.

That’s
why I want to make sure that the people around me are safe drivers. I
want to make sure that I, as well as everybody I know, am doing
everything to be aware on the road and in control of my vehicle.
Apart from being the absolute best driver I will be, I will also take
notice of reckless drivers on the road any be wary of them at all
times so as to avoid any accidents that could possibly occur. The
amount of people I see every day running red lights, not using
blinkers, and not staying in their lane is proof enough that driving
can be very dangerous without communication, awareness, and control.
