Driving
With Knowledge

The
percent of automobile accidents that happen in one year is increasing
rapidly. Drives between the ages of 16-20 are the most prominent to
traffic accidents, According to
Car
accidents Statistics- 2019 (overview)

study. The study’s data also identified that, “nearly 40,000
fatal car accidents happen in the U.S. every year, more than 90
Americans die due to car accidents(Djurkovic, Nikola).” order to
decrease these unfortunate statistics drivers must be more
knowledgeable while driving.

The
more a person drives the better that they’ll become at driving.
Although this is true, drivers also need to know the rules of
driving. Those whom complete drivers education usually are better
drivers than those who don’t. In drivers ed the instructor teaches
the rules in the book that most new drivers don’t know. The AAA
Foundation conducted a study that exhibits three major differences of
driver that complete drivers ed and those who don’t. The study
reveals that, “Drivers who complete drivers ed, usually have
the highest test scores on the drivers exam and are normally more
careful and aware while driving…drivers ed is associated with
a lower incidence of both crashes and convictions – reducing crashes
by 4.3% and convictions by nearly 40%”(DriveSmartGeorgia.com).
These rates won’t completely solve the problem, but it definitely
helps reduce the amount of crashes that occurs.

In
2017, my mother was involved in 2 car accidents. The first car crash
happened on her way home from work, an older couple failed to stop at
a stop sign. My mother’s car was totaled and her back was hurt
severely. The second crash, a public transportation bus pulled off at
the end of a yellow light. Only paying attention to the light
changing green, my mother collided with the bus. Prior to the
accidents, she has completed 4 different physical therapy programs,
pain management, bariatric surgery to help reduce her back pain and
diagnosed with degenerative disc disease and severe arthritis. Due to
her pain, she had to resign from her position as a hospice caregiver,
leaving us with no income. As of October of 2019, my mother was
finally approved to receive disability after being denied 2 times. In
april of 2019, a friend of mine (Larenzo) died due to internal
bleeding in the brain. While in the car with a friend whom was
driving recklessly, a school bus crashed into the side of the car.
The impact of the bus on him was significant, almost killing him
instantly. Larenzo fought for his life until he passed away on Easter
Sunday. Although I personally was not involved and have never been
involved in a car accident, I have experienced significant financial
and emotional distress due to them.

To
be a safer driver and help reduce the number of deaths related to
driving. Drivers should review the latest drivers manual every couple
years; This could help keep drivers be knowledgeable and up to date.
Staying focused while driving is critical, drivers should plan ahead
to minimize distractions as much as possible. You can do this by:
being aware of the weather, leaving early so speeding is not a
factor, picking music before taking off, and staying off your phone.
Drivers also should make sure everyone is always wearing their
seatbelt, keep an appropriate distance from the car in front,
position your hand on the steering wheel correctly, look ahead a
block to be aware of the traffic, never drink under the influence,
and maintain good maintenance on the car.
