Imagine
yourself driving calmly after a long day, listening to music, and
enjoying yourself. When all of a sudden, BOOM! One moment you were
jamming out to Michael Jackson, and the next, you can barely move.
You can still hear Michael’s voice, but a loud ringing sound begins
to overpower it. You feel lost, and extremely weak. All your air got
sucked out of your lungs that you could barely even breathe. You
don’t understand what’s happening. You see blood, but you can’t
feel your body. “Get up!”, you tell yourself. As you struggle
trying to get up, you hear the ambulance sirens approaching from
afar, and the last memory you have before closing your eyes is being
in the car, feeling completely hopeless.
This
is what victims of car accidents go through. There is a numerous
amount of deaths that are caused by car accidents every year, some of
which include hit and runs. By getting the education needed on
driving safely, it may reduce the number of deaths. What people don’t
think about is that even if someone else is driving irresponsible,
you could be equally at fault for not driving defensively. Driving
defensively and staying focused on what you’re doing may reduce the
number of deaths. Getting rid of distractions, such as cellphones or
other technology, may also reduce the number of deaths, because if
your focus isn’t one hundred percent on the road, then anything can
happen in those five seconds that your eyes turn to look at your
phone. Being smart and responsible about your choices when driving is
another way to help with this problem. Research has shown that
fatigue has a similar effect as driving under the influence. If you
didn’t sleep the night before, it’s better to stay home and take
a long nap, rather than feeling tired, disoriented and drowsy all
day, because this can cause a lack of focus, which can put you and
others in danger when driving.
Fortunately,
I have not experienced this, but I have seen other people be
tragically affected by it. Some cases are more severe than others.
However, that does not excuse the fact that there are people out
there driving irresponsibly. To be a better and safer driver, some
steps you can take are always getting rid of distractions and staying
alert of your surroundings on the road. This is important, because by
driving irresponsibly, you may not only put yourself in harm’s way,
but also whoever’s in the car with you, and other people involved
in the collision. Driving irresponsibly is a serious matter that
needs to be talked about. Don’t be that person that puts others in
danger due to poor decisions. Always drive safe!
