In
the Driver’s Seat
I
will never forget the first time I held the keys to my car. It was
awe-inspiring to finally being able to drive; however, driving can
become very stress inducing. Yet, before I could get behind the
driver’s wheel, I was able to take a drivers ed course my
school provided. When I took the course, the instructor I was given
honestly made me fear driving a car. As she brought up a new topic
about driving, she would follow up with her own experience when
driving. My instructor would inform the class on how a vehicle
crashed into her after running a red light or how she witnessed a
pile up of cars happen in an intersection. By the end of driver’s
education, I didn’t want to drive; all I could think of was the
consequences of driving and I was afraid. When I did start driving, I
began seeing little mistakes other drivers would do that could’ve
turned into disastrous. It’s honestly surprising how some drivers
are easily distracted by either their phones or by just daydreaming
behind the wheel. Some drivers are being extremely irresponsible by
driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol; which only makes
drivers incompetent of what is happening around them. If drivers kept
their full attention on the road when driving, than it can reduce the
number of deaths each year. I have a friend who almost lost his life
last year from driving home from work one night. He wasn’t
drinking, he wasn’t on his phone, and he wasn’t multitasking; he
just simply fell asleep behind the wheel while driving down the
interstate…There were no other cars involved during the wreck, his
truck slowly drifted of the road, his truck hit a stump, and sent his
truck rolling towards a tree. When the paramedics arrived to the
scene, his truck was mangled and the only injuries he sustained was a
severe broken arm and some fractured ribs. It was even a miracle that
he even survived a wreck like that. Not many people in his situation
can say they survived a wreck that intense. There aren’t many steps
you can take to better someone else’s driving, but there are steps
that will make you a better a driver.
The first and most
important step in being a safer and better driver is to pay
attention. You have to stay focused when driving, you have to stay
focused. Driving is the most dangerous thing people can do every
single day. If you do not pay attention to you and your surroundings,
than you or someone else will kill you. Another step in insuring a
better and safer driver is to pay attention to other drivers. Other
drivers might see something that you cannot see yet, other drivers
could be in the blind-spot of your car and vise-versa, and other
drivers can more reckless because they are more “comfortable”
with the road and can tend to go faster. The importance of driver’s
education is for drivers to be more aware of their surrounds as well
as other people’s surrounding.
