Not too long ago, I got my driver’s permit. To get my permit, I had
to learn as much information about road signs and traffic regulations
as possible, and write a test in hopes that I passed. What I realized
soon after I got my permit is that most of the information that I had
absorbed in order to prepare for my test was already forgotten.
Knowing that I had passed that test, the information became somewhat
unimportant to me because I had already gotten my permit so I asked
myself why I should still have to remember all those seemingly
irrelevant things I had crammed into my brain. This is the case for
many people, and it is a very incorrect and hazardous mindset. The
responsibility of being a driver is more than just simply sitting in
the driver’s seat. It is a driver’s duty to be fully aware of all
hazards that could occur while driving and know how to properly and
safely prevent them.
The most important thing to have when in the driver’s seat is
knowledge. Not just knowledge about how to drive, but most
importantly how to drive safely and smartly. This is important
because it prepares individuals for any circumstances that may occur
on the road in which they are not expecting, therefore reducing the
amount of car crashes and deaths on the road that may occur as a
result of the driver not knowing how to handle these unforeseen
circumstances. The number of vehicle-related deaths in the world is
outstanding. The majority of these deaths could have been prevented
if the person or people involved would have been better educated on
proper safe driving practices. That being said, reducing the number
of driving related deaths starts with providing better and more cost
effective sources for drivers to become properly trained and equipped
to drive. In my life I have seen countless acts of reckless driving.
People improperly using road signs, using their cell phone while
driving, and driving over the posted speed limit. All of these
situations are examples of why the world as a whole should become
more knowledgeable about why it is important to drive safely, and the
consequences of unsafe driving because although these circumstances
do not lead to an automobile accident in some cases, it has happened
thousands of times to others across the world. Many people believe
that for some reason it won’t happen to them, but it definitely
could, and it would be much better to become properly educated about
safe driving rather than becoming injured or possibly deceased
because of a seemingly harmless act.
Ultimately, an essential way to prevent driving related deaths is to
provide better education to all drivers about proper driving
practices and make them more aware of the dire consequences of unsafe
driving. By informing yourself about how to be a smart driver, you
could be saving a life.
