When
first getting my license, the rules of safe driving were ingrained in
my head. Always wear a seatbelt, don’t ever look at your phone,
never get in the car with someone that has been drinking etc. With
those rules in place I never thought that there would be nearly as
many accidents as there are, I know that they’re well known so why
are so many people still in danger? In the past three months, I
myself have been in two car accidents where the other person was
found at fault. The first one had me nearly ran off the road due to a
distracted driver that didn’t even look before deciding to switch
lanes and well, with the second one I really couldn’t be at fault.
I was sitting in the school parking lot waiting to go into school
when a Junior came in through the exit, going over thirty mph in an
icy parking lot and slammed into my driver side door. In both cases I
had no control of the situation and yet I was still in an accident.
So how can we put those safe drivers in a position caused by someone
who isn’t as likely to follow the rules?
If
you are able to drive a vehicle, a great deal of responsibility comes
along with that privilege and I don’t think that many people
actually understand that. I myself even have times where I may be
going over the speed limit or not paying as much attention as I
should but from now on I will make sure to put my driver safety first
to ensure the safety of others and myself. I hope by writing this
essay, people get a greater understanding of the impact they have on
others when they decide to pick up their phone or simply just not pay
attention when behind the wheel.
