Just
one second is all that stands between life and death when it comes to
car accidents. Your whole world can change with one wrong decision
by you or another driver. My mom is always telling me “I’m not
worried about what you are going to do, I’m worried about all the
other drivers.” I always roll my eyes at her a little, but she
really is right in the fact that we have no control over other
drivers on the road.
Just
one second is all it takes to check your phone, change your radio
station, adjust the air, or glance in the back seat. There are so
many different distractions for drivers these days. Driving is a big
responsibility that most people take for granted. I feel that it is
very important to educate all drivers, not just new drivers, on the
dangers of distracted and irresponsible driving. Some steps we can
take to reduce the number of motor vehicle deaths are to require
everyone with a drivers license to complete an online course about
safe driving practices. Another step is to set up our phones so we
can’t text or receive texts while driving. Also we need to teach
about the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Just
one second was the only thing that saved me from having an accident
on two different occasions. Once I was driving my grandmother and
everyone slammed on their breaks in front of us. I had one second to
react, and I was able to stop and keep from hitting the car in front
of me. Another time was when my sister screamed about a car that had
switched lanes just as I was about to pull out on the road. One step
I use to be a safer driver is to put my phone away while I’m driving.
I also pay attention to my surroundings. Another precaution I try to
use is defensive driving which means always watching out for the
other cars and trying to stay out of their way.
Just
one second is all it takes to put your phone up before driving, or to
think about your condition before you get behind the wheel. It is
also sometimes all the time you have to avoid an accident. Create
your own safe driving practices to follow. Make sure you are not
distracted, in good condition to drive, and always pay close
attention to other cars while driving.
