In
the past 10 years there have been more deaths from car accidents than
ever before. Why might that be? If you think about it, when did the
first smartphone come out? It seems that when the smartphone market
started to rise, so did the number of deaths from car accidents.
Whether we want to admit it or not, our phones are extremely
distracting, especially for teens and young adults.
You are driving
down the freeway and you hear your phone buzz, now you’re attention
is focused on who just texted you and you are no longer 100 percent
focused on the road. 41 percent of car accidents from phone use were
simply due to just looking at the smartphone. In the blink of an eye,
something could jump out of the road or somebody could swerve into
your lane or most commonly, somebody in front of you slams on their
breaks.
It
is important to be informed about what kind of affect your cellphone
has on you while driving. To be fully attentive to driving, it is
best that you put on your ‘Do Not Disturb While Driving’ setting
on your phone that way, when you are driving and receive a
notification, you will not receive it until you are stopped driving.
Or more simply, put your phone face down and be able to reject the
urge to look at it. There should not be more death rates due to
unsafe driving than their is military deaths. You never know how
quickly someone on the road can pull out in front of you or slam on
their breaks, which is why it is important to not use your phone
while driving because safety for you and others should always come
first.
