Don’t Learn Safety by Accident
Driving has become ingrained
into our society to the point that it is no longer seen as a
privilege but a necessity. For this, people are so eager to drive
that they end up dismissing the importance of drivers ed
and the safety concerns behind driving. As a driver, there is a
requirement of taking DriversED in order to be informed of the laws
and regulations that correlate with driving. By taking DriversED, one
is better equipped on what to do during emergencies and how to avoid
them; ensuring a safe driving environment within and outside the
vehicle. The more people that take DriversED and acquire this
knowledge, the less likely car-related deaths and accidents will
occur due to them being educated and practicing safe driving. Other
than taking DriversED, car-related deaths can also be reduced by
understanding and maintaining your vehicle, being attentive to your
surroundings (especially at night), and eliminating any unnecessary
distractions (e.g. phones, loud friends, radio). Although one can
take all these precautions, accidents can still occur due to
another’s recklessness. For instance, I was involved in a
hit-and-run in which it was the perpetrator’s fault. It happened on
the freeway during traffic hour, where one is supposed to drive slow
and be attentive to any abrupt stops. Yet the other driver was
speeding and ended up rear-ending us due to his lack of attention to
the situation ahead of them. Due to my background knowledge from
DriversED, I knew what to do in this situation by properly removing
myself from the main road and putting my hazard lights on. Luckily,
no bodily harm was inflicted on myself or the other passengers, yet
this experience has made me more aware of the importance of safe
driving. For that, in order to ensure a safe driving environment and
be a better driver, I will take in consideration the little and big
things. These things range from leaving the right amount of space
between me and the car in front of me and waiting four seconds at a
stop sign, to giving the right of way to oncoming traffic. With these
and a backing of drivers ed, I hope to play a part in the
notion of safe and educated driving.
