Is
it really worth it?
In
your life, what is the most essential everyday task? It may
not come to your thoughts
right away but most people would consider it to be driving.
As an eighteen year old female, I witness first hand the
recklessness and irresponsibility of my peers when it comes to
operating a vehicle. A lot of individuals don’t seem to realize
that driving is a privilege and not a right, it’s almost as if
there is a competition to see who can tell the most thrilling story
of how their lives were on the line because of excessive speeding or
lack of attention. Recently, there was a death of one of our students
in my class. The driver was on their phone, not paying attention and
swerved into a ditch. That split of a second that the driver took
their eyes off the road cost someone’s life and raised the
awareness of driver safety to our school district. They recently
brought back the drivers ed class to implement a safer
environment for young drivers who are still learning the ropes of
driving. The amount of information fed to the students could save
multiple lives on and off the road. There’s countless steps to be
taken in order to become a safer driver. Simple things such as
driving slower, buckling up, putting your phone away and, etc. They
may seem too little to make an impact on safety but if everyone were
to do the same things it would make a huge impact overall. I’m not
saying that i’m the perfect driver or that I always exemplify the
right things when driving whatsoever but recently I have been
realizing the importance of practicing safe driving. Recently my
cousins boyfriend passed away on the freeway down south, he was on
his way to her house and she called him on the phone, he picked up
and told her that he loved her and he would be there in no time. It
wasn’t until an hour later that she got a phone call that he was in
the hospital and would more than likely not survive. It’s crazy how
the smallest movement can change someone’s life and if he weren’t
to pick up that phone maybe he would be here today. Accidents happen
and life goes on but the effect of something as simple and harmless
as a phone call can cost you your life and others lives as well.
Starting today I will be making a change to my driving habits, I will
no longer be recklessly speeding or not concentrating on the road.
Habits take about 21 days to break and from here on out I will take
safety precautions because anything can happen at any given time, I
can’t predict the future but I sure can do my best to make my
outcomes favorable. I hope that to whomever is reading this decides
to make changes to their driving for the sake of yourself and others.
Let me ask you just one more question, is it really worth it?
