Let’s prevent the next motor vehicle death
Taking the road for
the first time can be an overwhelming and nerve-racking experience.
Your mind is filled with distractions; which mirror do I look in, can
I move over, is there enough space between me and the driver in the
front of me? All these questions can be easily answered through a
drivers ed course. Driving education holds a great
importance for the safety of not only the driver but the individuals
on the road as well. A course can show you the values of driving and
teach you beneficial defensive driving habits that will provide you
with alertness and readiness for any type of situation on the road.
According
to the association for safe international road travel,” Nearly 1.25
million people
die in road
crashes each
year, on average 3,287 deaths a day.” These alarming numbers can
change if we, as a society, take the steps to prevent motor vehicle
deaths. First off, drivers should be confirming with passengers that
everyone is wearing their seatbelt. This is the best way to ensure
safety in a car at any time. Second, never get behind the wheel of a
car if you are under the influence of any type of alcohol or drug.
The repercussions are not worth it and can result in serious injury
of yourself or others on the road. Third, stay off your phone when
driving. Do not let distractions be the cause of an accident. If you
absolutely need to use your phone pull over until you are ready to
continue driving without distractions. Lastly, ensure you are driving
within the speed limits and are always cautious of your surroundings.
Reckless driving can lead to unnecessary accidents which could have
been easily prevented. I truly believe all of these steps can save a
life. This past year my best friends were involved in an accident
near my house. I became a witness to it after we were on our way to
get food at a nearby restraint. The other driver was driving over 50
miles over the speed limit and make an illegal U-turn resulting in
his car plowing into my friends. Both my friends were left with
severe concussions and broken bones while the other driver was
completely okay. This was a real wakeup call for all of us as
sometimes it is easy to become reckless in your driving, but we must
remember this situation can happen to anyone. Thankfully that day
everyone was wearing their seatbelts because they could’ve easily
become another number added to the already high motor vehicle death
rate. As a diver myself, I will always speak up in any situation
where a driver is being reckless and will ensure myself as well as
the induvials entering my car will be wearing a seatbelt at all
times. In the future I can continue to be a safe driver for the
passengers in my car and the people around me on the road, so the
safety of others is not in danger.
