Driver’s
Education is very important in preventing teen deaths. My school does
offer a Drivers ed course to all students. During the in
the car portion of Drivers ed, the students are able to
develop good driving habits in the presence of a trained
professional. I was fortunate enough to have parents that are good
drivers, and they were able to teach me good habits before I took the
class. However, for students who are not this fortunate, this could
be the difference between life and death.

Many
new drivers look straight down at the lines right in front of the
car. In the Drivers ed class, the instructor helps to form
the habit of looking farther down the road. Looking ahead can add
critical time that can reduce the risk of an accident. Making a
Drivers ed class mandatory could further reduce driving
related deaths in teens. During the class a few videos were shown of
teens that were driving recklessly and died as a result. The videos
go on to show the anguish of the family. A few of the students in my
Drivers ed class drove recklessly because they though it
was fun. After watching these videos, they no longer drove recklessly
because they did not want to hurt their families. I have never been
in a car accident, but I have seen what can happen when people drive
too recklessly. During my freshman year of high school, a senior was
driving 90 MPH on a road with a posted speed limit of 40 MPH. The
driver only faced minor injuries, but everyone knew that he lost his
license. He asked the Drivers ed teacher to tell his story
of how he lost his license, but more importantly how if he would have
hit another car instead of a telephone pole he could have killed
someone.

The
federal government should create grants that would allow all schools
to have a Drivers ed program, because there is nothing more
important than saving lives. The government has already proven that
they care about education through the creation of the Common Core
Curriculum. They should create curriculum that can save lives, and
one of the most important classes to save lives is Driver’s
Education. Additionally, very rarely on the local news do they show
car accidents because they do not seem that interesting, but if
people heard about more accidents from driving errors they would be
more likely to critique their own driving habits. There are many
steps that can be taken to lower the risk of death from car
accidents, but nothing is more effective than a Drivers ed
course.
