Growing
up, my mother always told me to practice being a defensive driver.
This being because lots of other drivers around you drive as though
they are not cautious nor do they focus on the dangers they are
bringing upon others. Driving around with my mother and taking
drivers ed taught me that being a driver is a privilege,
and not everyone deserves it. While in drivers ed I learned
many skills to make me a defensive driver and protect myself, my
passengers, as well as other drivers. Taking drivers ed
brought to my attention the dangers of being a young driver and the
responsibilities I take on with the task. I’ve also taken a Car
Teens class that helped inform myself and other teens the dangers of
things such speeding, running lights, and minor accidents. This class
was to be taken after making mistakes, with the class being served as
the consequence.
While
many believe that drivers ed is not beneficial, I believe
that it is. With people taking the course more people are aware of
the dangers and precautions need to be taken that are involved with
being a driver. Drivers ed can help young drivers and
experienced drivers keep up with laws and driving techniques to
remain safe and prevent car accident related deaths. There are many
things that can be done to decrease the number of fatal car
accidents. One thing that I think can be done is, having each driver
take a course to refresh their memory on the laws and regulations of
driving. This course would only have to be taken every few years.
Another step is, creating informational events and possibly ads to
inform everyone about the dangers of driving and how to be safe
against other drivers.
As
a kid I’ve been in one car accident and witnessed many. In 2010, my
grandmother was struck by a drunk driver from across an intersection.
The driver had two kids in the car while intoxicated and could have
possibly injured more people. My grandmother walked away alive but,
with multiple hip and leg fractures, and a lifetime’s worth of pain.
This incident showed me that not only do you need to be cautious of
your driving but you also need to watch other’s driving as well. I
believe that if the driver took better precautions before operating
the vehicle and was further educated on the dangers of driving while
under the influence the accident may not have happened.
Personally
I can make myself a better driver by continuing to follow the laws
that I learned in drivers ed and being cautious of my
surroundings while driving. I can also be a safer driver by updating
myself on laws and regulations relating to driving and informing
myself on things I need to know to help myself on the road and
improve safety. I can help others by sharing my knowledge on safe
driving. Also I can encourage others to take courses on safe and
effective driving to help improve driving safety and lessen the
numbers of fatal accidents.
Therefore,
drivers ed is very beneficial because it gives new and
experienced drivers vital information on how to stay safe and protect
others. The information provided by drivers ed courses
plays a part in how the society can work to prevent fatal car
accidents and accidents in general. I believe that taking this course
before driving made me a better driver and I would definitely take
one again to help refresh my memory and tighten up my driving skills.
