How to Improve Driving

The
privilege of driving a car is taken advantage of daily by drivers.
Many drivers go through drivers ed, receive their license, and
through out everything they learned when they drive on their own.
Drivers ed is important to creating a strong foundation for a
new driver. There are countless lives that are taken each year due to
drivers ignoring their drivers ed. If each driver drove as they
did while just learning, the streets would be filled with observant,
defensive drivers.

I
believe there are various ways of reducing the number of deaths due
to driving. First, drivers ed could be stricter. For teenagers
who choose to complete parent-taught courses, there could be more
requirements for the course. Instead of the honor system, the parent
could be required to bring their child to the DMV after each module
or unit to be tested. This would prevent teenagers who might lie on
their driving forms to truly learn and care about what they do on the
road. Second, there should be opportunities for the student to
receive feedback from a certified driving instructor if they are
enrolled in a parent-taught driving course. This would allow the
student to receive crucial and unbiased descriptions of how they are
driving. A third idea I have is that there should be a required class
that each driver with a learner’s permit must take, despite if they
are doing an online course. This class would only last a day and
clearly define the rules of the road and health habits of a driver.

Irresponsible
driving is apparent in real life and in movies. I frequently see
friends or family calling someone while driving, checking their phone
while driving, repeatedly changing the A/C or radio station, and
eating while driving. I am thankful for never have been in a car
accident, but I know these unhealthy habits my friends and family
have could lead to a collision. I plan on being a safe driver through
creating good habits while driving. An important one to me is hiding
my phone as I drive. Taking the ability to text or call away will
help me center my focus to the road and drive defensively. Many
drivers today are not defensive drivers and make the roads more
dangerous. I plan to always watch my surroundings and not let pride
get the best of me. Another habit I plan to make is to not allow
myself to eat as I drive. I am a complete foodie and love fast-food.
If I am hungry, I plan to allot time to go out and eat instead of
earing while driving. This will help keep both hands on the wheel and
make me focus on the road.

It
is evident that as technology gets better, so will our need to use
technology all the time. Drivers need to become more educated on the
danger of using phones or a car’s accessories so that we can
prevent crashes that occur daily.
