A Small Distraction Can Lead to a Large Impact

Right now, driver’s licenses seem like they are being given out
without any proper education as long as the teenager has “experience”
in driving and is able to pass the test they can get a license. Right
now, this mismanagement of knowledge is what is causing the high
amount of deaths as a result of driving.

Hence, if we are able to enforce a more structured system into
educating teenagers on safer driving habits to ensure that they have
both the experience and knowledge to go driving, knowing that if they
use what they learned they will be safe. The main thing that would be
the best for teenagers to learn before they go out by themselves to
drive is defensive driving, which is one of the most crucial
teachings from driving education that even experienced drivers use.
The importance of drivers ed is reflected in defensive driving,
and if every driver was defensive than every driver would be safe.
But, because we have younger drivers that were never taught defensive
driving, which in turn is one of the biggest causes for why young
drivers die. Thus, if teenagers were given some drivers ed,
even just teaching them how to be a defensive driver, they will be
more focused and aware of their surroundings rather than if they had
no driving education to the point where they got easily distracted
while driving which takes their focus off of the road and other cars
to something else like texting or friends that are in the car with
them. If steps are taken towards ensuring that defensive driving is
taught to make young drivers more cautious and focused on their
surrounding while driving, I believe that the amount of deaths as a
result of driving will greatly decrease.

I personally had an experience with how important defensive driving
is to have learned at an early point in anyone’s driving career.
For the first type that I went driving when I only had my permit, I
was a very distracted driver that wasn’t always looking forward or
in my mirrors to be aware of my surroundings. So, as a new driver, I
got distracted by small things like a buzz from my phone which caused
me to clip a light pole resulting in a broken head light. After the
crash happened, I was shocked, and I didn’t want to ever drive
again because even though the damage was small, the shock and impact
that the crash had was large. I saw how easily it was to do damage
even if you were driving slow or just slightly distracted. But I
couldn’t always cower in fear of the damage I could do, rather I
had to embrace the fact of how easily I could kill someone or get
myself killed because I was being foolish. This realization is what
lead me to take the steps to get a driving instructor to give me
driving education and to teach me things like defensive driving and
how to maintain my focus on my surroundings while driving so that I
didn’t ever get distracted by the small things that happen within
the car that could end up leading to a big impact before I even knew
it was coming.
