the Driver’s Seat

The
importance of drivers ed in reducing the number of deaths from
driving is to give drivers the knowledge and skills they need in
order to drive safely and responsibly.

One
step that can be taken to reduce the number of deaths related to
driving is to require more practice and supervision with a licensed
driver, such as a parent. Another step that can be taken would be to
have stricter requirements relating to school. For example, students
with poor behavior tendencies or repeated disciplinary actions should
not be eligible for a driver’s license. If a student isn’t mature
enough to control their immature impulses, they are not ready to
control a vehicle, which can maim or kill people if operated
inappropriately.

I
am fortunate that I have not been in a car accident and have not had
friends or family drive irresponsibly while I am in the vehicle.

One
of the best steps that you can take to be a better and safer driver
is to attend a hands-on defensive driving course. Recently, I
participated in Doug Herbert’s B.R.A.K.E.S., a teen pro-active
driving school that teaches Distracted Driving Awareness, Panic
Braking, Crash Avoidance, Car Control/Skid Recovery, and
Drop-wheel/Off-road Recovery. This course and others like it
drastically reduce the rate of car accidents and deaths of teens.
These courses provide greatly needed hands-on experience for
hazardous situations that occur on the road. This is better than a
purely instructional classroom experience, because when these
situations occur, the correct defensive maneuver will be a reflex and
the person will be able to respond immediately and safely. Those who
have not received this type of training may not be able to respond to
these situations in time or correctly.

Attending
this type of course will not only protect the individual who
attended, but it will also make driving safer for all who interact
with them on the road. Those who attend these courses can personally
make the road a safer place by encouraging others to do likewise.
This can create a chain reaction, where more and more people take the
course, becoming safer drivers and encouraging others to do the same.
