For
many people who have reached the driving age in America, most do not
hesitate in learning a how to drive, and once this is learnt they
often feel a great sense of accomplishment and happiness because of
this achievement, but if they knew the dangers that are present on
the road, many would be hesitant to learn in the first place. For
2016 specifically, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration
(NHTSA) data shows 37,461 people were killed in 34,436 motor vehicle
crashes, an average of 102 per day. This is a huge problem in the
nation and while we continue to make innovations and strategies to
prevent such, we can do more, and an example of such is an improved
drivers ed program.
A
sizeable fraction of the deaths that result from driving can be
linked to lack of knowledge, despite the drivers ed program
given in this country, the best way to counter this problem is by
improving it, by not only educating students on what and what not to
do, but by educating them on what happens if they do not follow the
rules. The drivers ed program should also be more
interactive between teacher and student, in order for real learning
to be done, instead of cramming to pass.
Other
actions that should be taken should be increased consequences for
failure to comply road safety rules and punishments for engaging in
activities which may decrease one’s attention while driving.
Secondly, the government must also work hard to improve faulty roads
which may increase risks of accidents. And lastly, the government
must set a standard for at which vehicles should be able to drive, by
doing so all vehicles which endanger the life of the driver and other
people would be removed from the road.
I
as an individual can make the road a safer place by making some
simple changes, such as removing all distractions while driving,
being more conscious about the state of my vehicle and by being more
focused while driving. I can also make the road a safer place by
being spreading the word and educating the public on the various
things they can do to make the road safer as well.
