Driver’s
Education is a crucial part of learning how to drive because it
provides you with the knowledge you need to keep you as safe as you
can be in a vehicle. Sitting behind the wheel for the first time is a
tornado of emotions. There are feelings of pride, confidence, fear,
and annoyance at the person sitting in the passenger seat. As a new
driver, all of these emotions were rolling through me. One of the
major things I remember is to drive calmly and with a clear head.
Ultimately, the choice is yours. Will you keep yourself and others
safe? Or will we see your name in the next teen accident death
headline?
Experience.
Experience. Experience. My mom has told me so many times that I need
experience; you would think I hear her say it in my sleep. All young
drivers are building their experience driving. But building the
experience is where over confidence steps in. Picture this, you have
finally gotten all of your hours in, passed the driver’s test, and
are taking a spin out by yourself. Quite possibly, it is a nice day
outside, so you roll the windows down, you’ve got the music up, and
you don’t have a care in the world. Next thing you know, you wake
up in the emergency room, bruised up, with broken bones, and you
trying to figure out what happened. What went wrong? The lack of
experience. Too much was added at one time, and the needed experience
was not there. Adding so many different stimulants in such a short
period, adds to the number of deaths. In short, we all need
experience.
While I have
never been in a car crash, I have seen the aftermath of many. I can
remember, when I was 10, seeing a vehicle after it crashed. My mom
told me that it is very easy to zone out while driving on a straight
road and it is also very dangerous to do so, as I witnessed in this
event. When my mom passed the wreckage, I could see through the
shadows of the other headlights that the car was on its side, tires
facing the highway. It was difficult for me to understand at that
time the importance of safe driving, but now, the scary thought that,
that might be me one day, runs through my mind when on the highway.
The more
experience you have the better off you will be. The same goes for me.
No, it is not any fun having my license and still driving my mom
around, but I am gaining valuable experience. The more parental
supervised driving I get, the more tips and experience I gain. If
nothing else is taken away from this, please get as much experience
as you can to keep yourself and others safe.
