Reducing
Traffic Fatalities
Education
is the first step for any problem to be fixed. For people to help
contribute to reducing traffic fatalities, they need to become aware
that there is an issue with drivers causing fatal accidents. Driver
education is a way for the masses to learn ways to avoid collisions
on the freeway, because they can learn ways to help detect distracted
drivers and avoid them. Today, we have very advanced technology and
we can let people experience real world events from behind a computer
screen. We can let people that drive distracted get into an accident
to see how fast things can change. Also, people can experience what
it is like to drive drunk with drunk goggles on the simulator.
There
are many steps to reduce the number of traffic deaths on the freeway.
The first step is to vote politicians into office that want to help
the fight against distracted driving. Having leaders in office to
support this cause is crucial, because the politician will pass laws
to help the fight to end automotive fatalities. Auto manufacturers
can help this fight too by adding more sensors to help the driver.
The 2019 Subaru Impreza has added sensors into the cabin of the car
that monitors the eyes of the driver to ensure that they are focused
on the road. When the driver’s eyes are not on the road, the car
will then alert the driver with sounds to help train them to keep
their eyes on the road. The United States government should mandate
stiff crash test laws that force car manufacturers to test crashes at
higher speeds.
I
have been very lucky in my lifetime that I have not experienced an
accident in my life, but I have seen my friends and family driving
irresponsibly. I am in high school, and I see my friends driving
others before it is legal to do so. I hear stories of my friends
going to parties where alcohol is present, getting drunk and driving
home. Some of my friends’ text when they are stopped at a traffic
light or on the freeway driving straight.
I
have always taken steps to be a safer driver. My Apple Watch and
iPhone automatically enable DND While Driving when they connect to my
car’s Bluetooth, and I refuse to check it. I have not had my
license for 12 months yet, so I refuse to drive my friends’ places
until I can legally. I also try to help people be safer on the roads.
When a friend texts me that they are driving I will tell them to
drive safe, put the phone down, and text me when they are parked and
out of the car. I tell them that our conversations are not worth
someone dying. Also, if I know that someone is driving, I will not
text them until they text me that they are not driving or I know that
they are home.
