It
Can Happen To Anyone

March
20, 2018. 4:52 PM. The day my best friend died from a car accident.
It was a casual Tuesday afternoon, we made plans to go play some
basketball after school at our local civic center, it was until I got
the call, the call that would change the way I saw life forever.
Hussein was involved in a deadly accident and was rushed to the
hospital, by the time I got the news he had already passed away. It
was all from one text. That second he decided to look away from the
road he hit the behind of a semi truck. One second was all it took.
One foolish mistake that costed his life. The agony and pain he
brought to his friends and family were unforgettable, it was surreal.

But,
it was also reality. Car crashes are scary. And they happen a lot.
Much more than they should. In today’s world young drivers run a
greater risk that any other age group, and it’s a problem still at
large. They speed they make mistakes, and they get distracted easily.
Now what can we do as a society to minimize the risks. We as a
society should begin utilizing tools like communication campaigns
that employ persuasive, emotional messages that are most effective
where young drivers are most concerned. Laws need enforcement to be
effective and should target areas of particular risk to young
drivers. Drivers ed or communication campaigns cannot be
expected to radically change a person’s life goals. For that
purpose active learning methods that make use of the learners own
experiences have to be applied. Special courses for young drivers
designed to make individuals conscious of their personal tendencies
and the type of social context that affect their behavior can be very
helpful.

There
is a myriad of ways to become a better and safer driver that society
can employ, but at the end of the day it all comes to the person in
the front seat. Step by step we can reach that goal, to make people
be aware of their mistakes, spread the message, set an example for
others. Slowly, but surely lives will be saved and fear will loom no
longer for drivers everywhere.
