How to stay focused in the road

One common trait I experienced when growing up was people always being distracted while driving. I mean while new equipment coming into cars with big touch screens, with all these new features, entertainment features, gps features, when it comes down to it it’s not just what people bring into their cars but the cars themselves. So, for me personally, my step one would be to eliminate any distractions in the car itself. Personally, when I started driving my dad taught me how to drive a standard or in other words a manual. So, while driving a standard I did not have the option to be on my phone because I constantly had to consider whether it was time for me to shift. Even in traffic situations I would not be able to be distracted because I will constantly have to change gears to match the pace of the vehicle in front of me. This would help keep me off my phone and staying focused on the road. Another thing I had to consider was not killing my car while leaving first gear. I get embarrassed very easily so the constant fear of killing my car would keep me to focus on my driving to worry who I was going to text next or what video did I just miss. Another step I would consider is thing about my car is that it is on the older side. I do not consider this a complete step so we will call it step one and a half. I do not have the same features as newer cars. I did not have any touch screen to play with and my music was too outdated to use on my phone anyways. Another step that helped was “hiding my phone.” I often would keep my phone is a distant spot away from me and make it a struggle to reach for. I would always put it in a spot to where if I were driving the access point to grab my phone was I uncomfortable and not easy to access unless I was not driving anymore. Keeping it in that spot would often discourage me to grab my phone while driving which helped a lot. These few steps are a generous portion because it can really show just how important it is to have a vehicle without distractions. Yet new vehicle with modern technology can also be an upside. So, my step two would be if considering a new vehicle look for features that would help. A new feature that is in many new cars is that your phone can connect to your vehicle. This feature had stopped the need to physically pick up your phone at look at it. Rather you could have your car tell you the caller and you have to the choice to accept or deny the call. This will often allow the driver to not worry about people call nor texting them while they drive because the car and give them the answer that they need to keep focus while staying hands off from the phone. Finally one thing that really got to me that I am personally jealous of is when the GPS can tell you the time remaining on the light. Some of these newer cars have the ability to tell you the time remaining on the light ahead of you. With this driver do not have to fill their time waiting at the light being on their phone rather than sitting at the green light as everyone behind is trying to get pass you. This feature will help a lot of people with being on time and not disturbing traffic for others while they drive. Overall, this feature needs to be considered in all future cars which would greatly reduce phone usage at light allow more people to get the places they want to get to faster. Step 3 would be always considered that when driving there are people always around you in other cars. People who are loved and needed. They aren’t just some cars on the road they you have to get past. It is a life of a person who means just as much as you do. For me, these statements helped me personally drive more focused because I would be able to imagine how my loved ones would react to me getting into an accident and I would not wish that on the people driving beside me. These 3 steps helped me, and my loved ones become safer and more focused drivers. Staying awake and alert from all precautions.
