It
CAN happen to you

In
2015 it was reported that an average of 103 people dies daily by
motor vehicle accidents. This number is higher than gun homicide
rates. This is truly alarming because vehicular homicide is one of
the top 3 causes of death for teenagers. My opinion on this is that
drivers ed courses do not push road safety as they should.
Drivers ed courses should allow a short video to be played showing
the consequences of people not being aware of the road. This might
sound a little graphic for some, but our eyes really need to be
opened to this. They also should always stress the importance of
keeping your eyes on the road, because anything could happen in a
split second. It’s obvious that you should never drink and drive
under any circumstances, but some people are so inebriated to the
point where they do not have control over themselves. Police should
start cracking down on drunk drivers but also be aware that the
person is in an alternate state of mind so they should proceed with
caution.

I
take safe driving very seriously because, in September of 2015, I
lost my father to a tragic car accident in which he was the only
passenger to lose his life. It was a multi-vehicle accident
consisting of 3 different cars, the one my father was in, the one who
hit him from the front, and the one who hit him from the rear end.
The car who hit my dad from the front crossed a solid white line on a
two-way street and ended up colliding head-on. This collision was
responsible for taking my father’s life. A truly tragic accident that
left my family and I completely devastated and lost for words. I have
also experienced being in the car with a drunk driver speeding and
swerving down the exact same street my father had his fatal accident
on. It was an extremely scary experience because had I not taken over
and drove myself, both of us would’ve been seriously injured or even
worse, killed.

I
will start driving my own car in December of 2019, so I will take
precaution when I am on the road. These precautions include staying
away from my phone, not sitting to too close to the steering wheel,
keeping my radio low when necessary, and most importantly, keeping my
eyes on the road always. To summarize this up, please do not wait
until something bad happens to you or someone that you are close to
as a result of reckless driving. It does not hurt to go back and read
over some basic rules and regulations of the road, as long as you are
practicing safe driving that is all that matters.
