It’s
Not Just You On the Road
One
of the lesser-acknowledged factors in driving is everyone and
everything else that is around you as a driver. I received my license
a little over six months ago, and through experience and observation,
I noticed car accidents are generally caused by nature or faulty
components of other vehicles.
When
I had my permit and tested for my license, one thing that was not
really acknowledged as an issue was environmental dangers that could
lead to accidents. Because of a single deer, I was in a serious car
accident with my mother, which resulted in us having to total our
car. We were traveling to a lake and on the turnpike, early in the
morning, and a deer managed to make its way onto the road. Half
asleep, I only heard my mother scream and saw a silhouette hit the
front of our car. Terrified, we managed to maintain a steady course
and keep going, as we couldn’t afford to stop. Eventually, the car
started smoking, and we had to pull over. Thankfully, a family who
was going there turned around and managed to pick us up. This shook
me for a bit, as I have never been in a car accident before. There
was no one to blame, as there was nothing that could be done to avoid
the accident. That made me realize that environmental dangers such as
deer, landslides, and floods are something that can be learned about,
but not necessarily avoided, which make it a problem. Even then, the
focus of self-safety overshadows the inevitable dangers. If I had the
opportunity to teach new drivers anything, I’d say to always be aware
of surroundings like hazardous hills, construction, deer, and
especially other vehicles with cargo or heavy machinery that can
easily fall or detach on the road.
