Being
on the road isn’t some normal everyday thing; Driving always has
its risks. Not only do we have to worry about our own actions as we
travel, but we must watch others, and hope that they are being
responsible and abiding by the law.
We
learn while we get used to driving, but knowing as much as we can
about just being on the road is very important and useful to
everyone’s future. I’ve experienced poor driving with others, but
nobody I’ve ridden with has had an accident, and neither have I.
When I drive, I never speed, I don’t try to speed through gaps to
get through traffic, and I’ll sit at a stop sign as long as I have
to so that I can ensure that I don’t get hit. My father told me,
“If you’re already late, there’s no need to rush.” I feel
that if more people lived with this in mind, there wouldn’t be so
many accidents.
Another
issue is texting and driving. I personally don’t attempt to look at
my phone on the road, but I know that other people do. People not
only lose focus on the road, but their overall awareness in their
vehicle decreases as well. There are multiple campaigns to get the
public to stop this irresponsible behavior, yet few drivers care. If
we could find a way to make the people realize the danger these
issues pose, other than the use of the authorities, then this could
reduce the number of deaths while driving. There are services that
mobile providers install to aid the effort, and there are apps that
attempt to make people verify that they aren’t driving, but these
are easy to bypass, and you don’t have to activate most of them.
Newer cars have the capability to keep drivers safe, and some drive
themselves, but not everyone can afford a new car, so there’s
always risks. Even with all of these developments, the statistics
remain.
Driver’s
Education used to be a requirement, and it is still available now,
but most people only take it to lower their insurance costs. Bringing
back Drivers ed would teach upcoming generations about the
dangers of the road, how to react in certain situations and stay
calm, and provide a place where they can get the driving experience
if they can’t at home. Then, even if they intend to drive
dangerously later on, their instincts will put them back in “driver’s
education mode” because of the guidance they received beforehand.
In
the end, even with the dangerous events that occur on the road
day-to-day, we could bring up a more responsible generation of
drivers, and then driving could become something we don’t have to
fear. Being on the road could just be something we do everyday, and
the day may come when nobody says “accidents happen”.
