Driving: A Manner of Ignorance

Safe
driving is all about keeping a level head and being aware of the
road, as well as other drivers. It is a seemingly easy task; however,
statistics seem to differ. With over 30,000 highway fatalities as of
2012, it seems like people are forgetting about the importance of
awareness, or are they? In truth, most of these deaths are related to
roadside ignorance and apathy towards the laws that keep us safe. I
have known plenty of people who have been in car accidents, and I
have been in cars with many reckless drivers. Most of these
experiences have been speeding cases or a broken red light, but the
importance is that the rule was broken. People could have been hurt
by these choices and I’m lucky nobody was. It is not like my driver
did not know the law, they simply ignored it due to a time limit or
“to have fun”. Choices like these are the biggest reasons to a
high death toll and it can be reduced with one act: respect. Respect
toward your fellow driver, toward the rules of the road and, most
importantly, toward the many pedestrians that walk the sweltering
streets every day.
