Proper
drivers ed is invaluable in today’s society with an
ever-growing population, all on the roads within a short time of
turning the legal age. While in previous times driving was only a
luxury available to those with wealth, times have changed. Just about
anyone can receive their license and within a few months of work are
able to afford their first car. This means that the amount of people
on the road is exceptionally more than even in previous generations
which is why Drivers ed is not a subject to be taken lightly. With
proper training, the amount of accidents that occur would decrease
and therefore keeping more people alive and able to return home to
their families after a night out.
Many
people, especially young drivers, don’t comprehend that they are
operating a 2000-5000 pound machine that can exceed 100mph. That does
not leave a lot of room for error especially considering the number
of distractions that drivers are exposed to. Not only do the phones
most of the population has in their pocket cause a significant number
of accidents, but flashy billboards, loud music, etc. all contribute
to a death rate much higher than it should be. While today’s phone
manufacturers have incorporated “Do Not Disturb While Driving
Mode”, it is up to the user to ensure they are turned on. More
emphasis needs to be in place about how dangerous distracted driving
really is.
I
personally have not been in an accident but being at a high school in
a small town, I see and hear about the almost daily occurrences. From
people not watching the road and ending up in a ditch, to others
reading a text and completely blowing through a stop sign. While I
can’t encourage an entire population to be a better driver, if
everyone did their part, the world would be much safer on the roads.
Every time I am a passenger in someone’s vehicle, I am sure to remind
them not to use their phone or that there is a person in their blind
spot. When people are in the vehicle with me I ensure that I lead by
example by not getting distracting and demonstrating good driving
habits. Even when you are driving by yourself, you are responsible
for not only your own safety but everyone else on the road with you.
Which is why it is important that more emphasis and better training
are involved in the future generations of drivers, and with enough of
it, the roads can become a safer place.
