I
have had an interest in agriculture since my freshman year of high
school when I became a member of Norco High School’s Agriculture
Department. I have learned important skills and life lessons through
the hands on approach to education that Ag has provided me. I now
know that I want to build a career for myself in the agricultural
industry. Ideally I want to manage a ranch or farm with a goal of
having my own corporation in the food production industry.
Agriculture is my passion and I want to be hands on and oversee every
step from soil to table.

While
having a few top priority extracurricular activities, I have made it
a goal to make them as widespread as possible. Freshman year I
joined Norco High School’s Future Farmers of America (FFA)
organization as well as the Blue Diamond Brigade marching band and
Symphony. I applied and interviewed for the FFA Greenhand Officer
team and was selected as President. While President I attended
several leadership conferences and team building events that taught
me the importance of being a fair leader who serves their peers. My
sophomore year I decided to join the Jazz band at Norco as well as
try out for the Girl’s Water Polo Team. Junior year I focused more
on Band and FFA, this year taught me a lot about prioritizing my
responsibilities and left me with the sense that I needed to invest
my energy into one of these groups for my senior year. Senior year I
went with FFA where I applied for the Norco Chapter Officer Team and
was selected as the Norco FFA Treasurer. As treasurer, I was in
charge overseeing the financial stability and transactions that took
place for FFA. This gave me real world experience in finances for an
organization. Through the FFA I have also put in over twenty five
hours of volunteer work by working weekends at rodeos selling raffle
tickets or leading groups in clean up at events such as rodeos, barn
dances, or animal auctions.

It
is very important to me to be able to get out of college debt free.
For this reason I am willing to work hard to pay for my education.
This scholarship will greatly help by offsetting the required dorm
costs as well as books. This will allow me to be able to spend more
time involved in the campus life and for study as I will not have to
worry about finding a high paying job off campus to cover this extra
cost. I will be pursuing a position on campus hopefully in the Ag
program as I do plan to work, but I can spend time focusing on the
critical work experience I’m gaining rather than the paycheck I’m
making. I am extremely determined to get my bachelor degree within
the agriculture college and hope to benefit the agriculture industry
and leave college a success that goes on to extend Cal Poly’s
reputation even further.
