How
one chooses to drive is a conscious and serious decision that is made
every time they go behind the wheel. Although many take the
responsibility of driving lightly, it is one of the most dangerous
everyday activities and, when not taken seriously, can have deadly
consequences.

9
people die each day in the United States due to distracted driving
(U.S. Department of Transportation). If we want to create safer
roads, we must begin with our own behavior. In order to become better
and safer drivers we must pledge to be more mindful of our
surroundings when behind the wheel. Taking an active interest in your
surroundings while driving is paramount to safety.

A
simple step to foster a more focused driving experience is to silence
notifications on one’s cell phone. Whether enabling driving safety
features or simply putting it on silent, the reduction of the
incessant buzzing of notifications promotes more focused drive and
prevents lapses in focus.

Another
way to reduce phone usage is to finish setting up before you get on
the road. Queuing songs in a playlist prevents you drifting into
oncoming traffic while you try to play a new song. In a similar way,
you can map out directions to your destination before going on your
phone. Being prepared before getting on the road prevents distracted
driving and fosters a safer driving experience.

These
are just a few simple steps that the individual can take to drive in
a safer manner. But to truly reduce driving deaths, there must be a
widespread and strong commitment to driving safety. This movement,
however, begins with the individual. By promoting a safe and aware
driving experience, we can move to reduce traffic-related deaths.

Practicing
safe driving techniques is easy. Putting a phone on silent is as
simple as a click of the button, literally. Mapping out the
destination beforehand takes around half a minute, which is
negligible when compared to the years that can be lost in an
accident. These easy changes reduce distraction overall, which will
reduce traffic accidents and deaths. Next time you get in the car
remember it is your decision: drive safely or drive recklessly.
